"Moonlit Sea"
Production year: 2025
Size: 1120 x 1455 mm
Material: panel, chalk, watercolor
Curator's Note
Together with the artist, we headed to a small village called Hantomari in the Goto Islands.
After crossing the mountains and passing through the forest, you will come across the quietly standing Hantomari Church and the vibrant, clear sea.
The pale blue of the church that seems to envelop the village and the deep blue of the sea that stretches beyond it make a strong impression on the place.
Kubo painted this painting after visiting Hantomari.
It was a full moon that day, and the big moon lit up the night sky.
The moonlit sky was tinted with the color of a half-lit sea.
There are no stars in the sky, instead there are twinkling stars in the sea.
This work captures a scene where the boundaries between the night sky and the sea seem to blend together into a single landscape.
