Curator's Note

The traditional Goto folk craft, the "Baramon Kite," is a lucky charm that has been given to boys on their first festival.
The name comes from "barakamon," which means "lively" or "brave" in the Goto dialect.

The paintings are colorful and powerful, featuring the faces of demons and the backs of warriors.
The original Baramon kite has long been popular as a symbol of toughness and strength.

In this work, "baramon," these traditional motifs are redrawn with LeNa SATO's signature gentle watercolor touch.
Rather than being brave, the expression has been transformed to one that exudes warmth, evoking images of "strength to protect" and "prayer that will be passed down."

If you look closely, you will see a cross design on the warrior's helmet and a crab motif on his chest. The crab is an important symbol in Japanese Christian culture, as can also be seen in the stained glass windows of Miiraku Church.

Folk art, faith, and daily life.
The atmosphere of Goto, where these elements naturally overlap,
This work is a quiet reflection.

About Artist

LeNa SATO

Graduated from Tama Art University's Department of Graphic Design. After working as a graphic designer at the interior design shop "unico," she moved to Canada, where she developed a sense of lifestyle while working at local interior design shops and cafes. After returning to Japan, she began working full-time as an illustrator and artist.

Using pigments such as face paint, watercolors, and acrylic paints, he paints plants, insects, and everyday scenes with a soft touch. He is also expanding his range of expression through activities such as illustrating magazines and packaging, as well as producing zines. The paintings in this exhibition, which seem to scoop up "fragments" found in Goto's nature, landscapes, and human activities, are somehow nostalgic and quietly stir memories in the viewer.
