Curator's Note
"Oneonde" is a Buddhist chanting dance handed down in Tomie Town.
The sight of dancers in brightly colored kimonos swaying their bodies in prayer creates a mysterious moment where serenity and excitement arise at the same time.
Known as "chankoko" throughout Goto, this traditional performing art has been passed down during the Obon period, with its form changing slightly from region to region. It is imbued with prayers to ancestors and the rhythm of life rooted in the land.
This work, "oneonde," was created by artist LeNa SATO during her stay in Goto.
The work was created in such a way that it captures the colors, movements, and air swaying that one sees when watching an actual dance performance.
The colorful colors are not only the splendor of the costumes,
It also reflects the layers of memories and prayers that have been passed down from person to person.
This painting is not the dance itself,
This piece depicts the "place" and "time" from which dance emerges.
About Artist
LeNa SATO
Graduated from Tama Art University's Department of Graphic Design. After working as a graphic designer at the interior design shop "unico," she moved to Canada, where she developed a sense of lifestyle while working at local interior design shops and cafes. After returning to Japan, she began working full-time as an illustrator and artist.
Using pigments such as face paint, watercolors, and acrylic paints, he paints plants, insects, and everyday scenes with a soft touch. He is also expanding his range of expression through activities such as illustrating magazines and packaging, as well as producing zines. The paintings in this exhibition, which seem to scoop up "fragments" found in Goto's nature, landscapes, and human activities, are somehow nostalgic and quietly stir memories in the viewer.
